You archive a Telegram chat, then someone sends one new message. Suddenly, it is back on your main list for anyone to see. That is why this guide exists.
We show you how to archive the chat, hide the Archived Chats row, and mute it so it stays out of sight. Then we show the hard truth: Telegram cannot be completely private from someone who can unlock your phone. The person holding the phone can open the app and read what is there. To set up Secret Chat, follow the Telegram secret chat guide.

Can You Hide a Chat in Telegram?
Yes. You can move a conversation into Telegram’s Archived Chats folder so it no longer appears in your main chat list.
However, Telegram does not treat archiving as a security feature. It is mainly designed to organize conversations and keep your inbox tidy.
Here’s the difference:
- Archive: Moves a chat out of your main chat list.
- Hide the Archive folder: Makes the folder less visible in supported Telegram interfaces.
- App lock: Requires authentication to open Telegram, depending on your device and settings.
- Secret Chat: Provides end-to-end encryption for a one-to-one conversation.
According to Telegram’s official guide to archived chats, you can move archived conversations out of the main list and return them when needed. But this does not mean they are protected by a separate password.
If your goal is simply to organize your inbox, Archive can be useful. If you want to prevent someone from reading your messages, you need additional protection.
Archive a Telegram chat
Telegram’s own blog says you swipe a chat into Archived Chats. The thread is still there. It is just off the main list.
How to Hide a Chat in Telegram on Android
You can archive a conversation in just a few steps. The exact interface may differ slightly depending on your Telegram version.
- Open Telegram on your Android phone.
- Find the conversation you want to hide.
- Press and hold the chat.
- Tap the Archive icon, usually shown as a box with a downward arrow.
- Open your main chat list and check whether the conversation has moved into Archived Chats.
The conversation should no longer appear in your regular chat list.
Important: The chat has not been deleted. Your conversation history remains available in the Archive folder.
If you cannot see the Archive folder, try pulling down on the chat list. Telegram explains this behavior in its official archived-chat instructions.
How to Hide a Chat in Telegram on iPhone
On an iPhone, you can usually archive a conversation with a swipe gesture.
Follow these steps:
- Open Telegram on your iPhone.
- Find the chat you want to hide.
- Swipe left on the conversation.
- Tap Archive if the option appears.
- Check the Archived Chats folder to confirm the conversation moved.
The chat should now be removed from your main list.
If you do not see the same options, check your Telegram version and the available swipe actions. The interface can change between app versions.
Remember, hiding a chat from the main list isn’t the same as locking it. Anyone who can access your Telegram account may still be able to locate the conversation.
The other person is not told. Archiving only changes what you see.
How to Hide the Archived Chats Folder in Telegram
Moving a conversation to Archive is only part of the process. You may also want to make the Archive folder itself less visible.
In supported Telegram interfaces, you can hide the folder from the top of your chat list using a swipe gesture.
Try the following:
- Open your Telegram chat list.
- Locate the Archived Chats folder at the top.
- Swipe left on the folder if your version supports it.
- Check whether the folder disappears from view.
You can usually reveal it again by pulling down on the chat list.
Telegram describes this feature in its official Telegram Tips channel.
Keep in mind that hiding the folder from view does not add a password or prevent someone from accessing your conversations. It only makes the Archive folder less visible at a glance.
Hiding the folder hides a label. It does not lock the chats inside it.
Why Do Archived Telegram Chats Reappear?
One of the most confusing things about Telegram Archive is that a conversation can return to your main chat list.
For example, you might archive a conversation because you don’t want it in your inbox. Later, the other person sends a message, and the chat reappears in your main list.
Why does this happen?
Telegram’s documented archive behavior distinguishes between muted and unmuted chats:
- Unmuted chats: A new notification can move an archived chat back into your main list.
- Muted chats: Telegram’s archive guidance says muted chats stay archived when new notifications arrive.
You can read the details in Telegram’s archived-chat guidance.
How to Keep an Archived Chat in the Archive
To keep a conversation archived, mute it before or after archiving.
- Open the conversation.
- Tap the contact or group name to access its information.
- Find the notification settings.
- Mute the chat.
- Archive it again if it has returned to your main list.
The wording and location of these options may vary by device and app version.
Remember: Muting controls notifications and can help keep a conversation archived. It does not prevent someone from opening Telegram and reading the chat.
An unmuted archived chat can jump back to the main list when a new message arrives. Telegram says muted chats stay archived.
Muting isn’t the same as hiding notifications. A muted Telegram chat can still be a Telegram notification, depending on your settings. Turning off message previews still leaves a Telegram-style alert. Apple explains how iPhone notifications work.
Is Telegram Archive Private?
Not completely. Archive is a convenience feature, not a privacy lock.
If someone can access your unlocked phone and open Telegram, they may be able to find archived conversations. Hiding the Archive folder does not change that.
It is helpful to understand the difference between three Telegram features:
| Feature | What it does | Does it lock the chat? |
|---|---|---|
| Archive | Removes a chat from the main list | No |
| Hide Archive folder | Makes the folder less visible | No |
| Telegram app passcode | Adds a lock to Telegram | Yes, when configured and enforced |
If you’re worried someone will check your phone, protect access to Telegram first rather than relying on Archive alone.
How to Protect Your Telegram Chats More Effectively
If you want better privacy, combine chat organization with account and device protections.
1. Enable Telegram’s App Passcode
People search for ways to lock a single Telegram chat. Telegram doesn’t offer a PIN for a single thread or the archive. That request is still open on Telegram’s suggestion board.
Telegram offers a passcode-lock feature on supported apps. Depending on your version, look under Settings → Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock or a similarly named option.
Telegram’s passcode notes say that if you forget your code, you have to delete and reinstall the app. Secret chats on that install are gone.
Set a strong passcode and enable automatic locking if available. You may also be able to use biometric authentication, such as Face ID or a fingerprint, depending on your device.
For additional guidance, consult Telegram’s official FAQ, which recommends using a strong app passcode and enabling two-step verification.
An app lock can help prevent unauthorized access to Telegram. However, it cannot protect messages if someone already knows your passcode or has access to an unlocked session.
2. Hide Message Previews on Your Lock Screen
Even if Telegram is locked, message previews may expose parts of a conversation through notifications.
Review Telegram’s notification settings and your phone’s notification-preview settings. Where supported, choose to hide message content on the lock screen.
This can help keep private messages from appearing when your phone is on a desk or someone glances at your screen.
3. Review Your Active Telegram Sessions
If you think someone else may have access to your account, check your active sessions.
Open Telegram’s settings and look for Devices or Active Sessions, depending on your app version. Review the listed devices and end sessions you don’t recognize.
You should also enable two-step verification to add another layer of protection.
4. Understand Telegram Secret Chats
Telegram Secret Chats are different from archived chats.
According to Telegram’s official FAQ about Secret Chats, Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption. This means only the participating devices can read the messages.
However, Secret Chats are one-to-one, device-specific conversations. They don’t let you turn an existing group conversation into a Secret Chat.
Also, end-to-end encryption does not stop someone from reading messages on an unlocked device or photographing the screen with another device.
For the technical details, see Telegram’s official explanation of end-to-end encryption.
5. Do Not Confuse Disappearing Messages With Complete Privacy
Some messaging features allow messages to disappear after a set time. That can reduce how long certain messages remain available, but it does not guarantee that nobody can copy, photograph, or otherwise record them before they disappear.
Choose privacy settings based on your actual concern: keeping chats out of your inbox, preventing unauthorized app access, or using end-to-end encryption.
Telegram Archive vs. Secret Chat: Which Should You Use?
The right option depends on your goal.
1. Use Archive if:
- You want to keep your main chat list organized.
- You want fewer conversations visible in your inbox.
- You need to access the conversation later without deleting it.
2. Use an app lock if:
- You want to stop someone from casually opening Telegram.
- You share a device or are concerned about unauthorized access.
- You want an extra barrier before someone can read your conversations.
Use Secret Chat if:
- You need end-to-end encryption for a one-to-one conversation.
- You understand that Secret Chats are device-specific.
- You want the additional controls available in Telegram Secret Chats.
These options serve different purposes. Archiving improves visibility, an app lock controls access, and Secret Chat uses a different encryption model.
Why hide still fails
Archive, a hidden folder, mute, and an app passcode all live inside Telegram. Someone who knows your phone passcode can open Telegram, pull down the list, and open Archived Chats.
A Telegram secret chat can sit in that list with a lock and a green name. That is easier to spot, not harder. Screenshot alerts are a separate job. See whether Telegram notifies a screenshot.
On iPhone, Screen Time shows how long you used each app. Open Settings, then Screen Time, then See All App & Website Activity. Telegram is a famous chat app. A lot of minutes there can look like a lot of chatting. WhatsApp and iMessage often look like normal family chat. Telegram often does not.
On Android, open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. The chart shows how much time you spend in each app. We can’t guess the exact label on every phone.
If you need messages off the default SMS inbox, that is a different page: how to hide text messages on Android and iPhone.
Another workaround is to add a second Telegram account in the same app. Telegram’s own notes say you can switch accounts in Settings. The other account’s list is hidden until you switch. That still leaves the Telegram icon. It still leaves usage minutes. It is not a per-chat PIN.
DailyNewsTalk when the job is the home screen
DailyNewsTalk is built for a chat that shouldn’t live in Telegram. It looks like a news app. After you install it, the home-screen name and icon change to DailyNews. The store listing can still say DailyNewsTalk or Secret Chat DailyNewsTalk.
To open the private area, you long-press the refresh button and enter your PIN. The news screen doesn’t open the thread automatically. New messages arrive as news-style alerts, not as a chat preview.
Telegram accounts start with a phone number. That creates a real weak spot in normal cloud chats. If someone has your unlocked phone and can receive the Telegram login code, they can add their own phone and see cloud chats without you handing over a Telegram username and password. Two-step verification adds another barrier. Secret Chats are different: they stay on the devices that started them and do not move to a new phone just because someone has the SMS code.
DailyNewsTalk starts with a user tag and password, not a phone number or email. There is no normal “send a code to this SIM” route into the account. Someone with your phone cannot add their own device from your number alone. They need the user tag and password you chose and did not share. Inside the PIN area, you can chat, send media, and delete messages on both sides. It has no forwarding or timer like Telegram’s tools. Plans are paid. We do not quote a price because store prices change.
See Google Play and the App Store.
This hides the chat from someone glancing at the home screen. It doesn’t hide the app from a search, and it won’t stop someone with your phone passcode from trying the long press. No app can promise that. We do not claim Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing will show the word DailyNews. Usage minutes still exist for that app. They just do not say Telegram.
Disclosure: We are associated with DailyNewsTalk. It is on this page because the job is a chat that does not live in Telegram, next to Telegram’s own hide tools so you can compare.
For Signal versus Telegram versus DailyNewsTalk, use the privacy comparison. Telegram has no group secret chat. Read Telegram secret groups for what a private group still stores in the cloud.
Questions people ask
How do I hide a chat in Telegram without deleting it?
Archive it. Hide the Archived Chats row if you do not want that label at the top. Mute it, or use Always Keep Archived so new messages don’t move it back to the main list.
How do I find archived chats in Telegram?
Pull the chat list down if the folder is hidden. Open Archived Chats. The thread is still there. You can unarchive it.
Can I lock one Telegram chat with a password?
No. Telegram can lock the whole app with a passcode. It doesn’t lock a single chat or the archive on its own.
Does archiving hide the chat from the other person?
No. They still have the thread. You only moved it on your list.
Is a Telegram secret chat a hidden chat?
No. Secret Chat is encrypted and device-bound. It can still show in Telegram with a lock and a green name. Read the Telegram secret chat guide.
Do not use this to harm people
These steps hide a row in your chat list. They do not hide Telegram from someone who has your phone and time. Do not use this page to snoop, trap, or scare someone.
