You matched. Now they want your number. WhatsApp and Telegram require a phone number for standard signup, while Signal offers an optional phone-numberless registration method in its Android beta. A messaging app without a phone number lets you create an account without providing a phone number, though the options and availability vary by app. You get a username or a code, not a SIM.
The page that ranks first for this search is a Reddit thread in r/androidapps. People want something that works on iPhone and Android, with no number and no email if they can help it. The names that keep coming back are Session, SimpleX, Element, and Threema. Burner SMS apps sit in a different search.
DailyNewsTalk is built for the dating-app version of this job. You sign up with a usertag. That usertag is the login. There is no phone and no email reset. The app looks like news until you long-press and enter a PIN. Download DailyNewsTalk.
This page is for your own chat. It is not a stranger room and not a way to text people who never agreed to talk.
Apps that skip the number, and apps that do not
| App | Signup | What you still trade |
|---|---|---|
| DailyNewsTalk | Usertag only. No phone. No email. | The usertag. A news app on the home screen. |
| Session | Account ID. No phone. No email. | A long ID. PCMag says chats can feel slow. |
| SimpleX | No user ID at all. You share a link or a QR code. | That link. Reddit users say notifications can fail. |
| Element / Matrix | A username on a server. Often an email. | The server you picked. Setup is heavier. |
| Threema | A random ID. Phone and email are optional. | A paid app. You must not attach a number later. |
| WhatsApp / Signal / Telegram | Phone number required/ Phone number or optional paid Signal Login (Android beta)/ Phone number or paid Fragment collectible number | A SIM, a VoIP number, or a crypto wallet. |

What people on Reddit say
The ranking thread asks for a cross-platform messenger with no phone number. Sibling threads in the same subreddit repeat the list. Session. SimpleX. Matrix with Element. Threema if you will pay. Zangi shows up as a username signup with calls. Discord and Slack get mentioned for families, then get dropped when the job is privacy.
A later r/privacy thread is blunter. The poster is on Signal, has a phone with no SIM, and cannot add the second device. Replies say Session, SimpleX, or Matrix. One person notes Signal now has usernames, but you still need a number to create the account. Another says Threema is fine if you never link a phone or email after you buy it.
People also warn you about the other SERP. TextFree, TextNow, and Talkatone hand you a second number so you can send SMS. That is a texting app without your real SIM. It is not a private chat. Those numbers get recycled. We are not writing that guide.
The social problem on Reddit is adoption. “Good luck getting your circle to move.” That is true for Session and SimpleX. It is also true for us. The person you already talk to has to install the same app.
Session
Session’s site is clear. You sign up with an Account ID. No phone number. No email. Messages are end-to-end encrypted. Traffic goes through onion-routed paths on community nodes. PCMag’s 2026 private-messenger roundup gives it a 4.0 and puts it under Signal. The plus is no personal info at signup. The minus is slow text and screenshot alerts that do not match on every phone.
Session is a good pick if you and one other person will live in a privacy app that looks like a privacy app. The icon says messenger. The ID is long. Anyone who opens the phone can see you installed Session.
SimpleX
SimpleX ranks on this SERP with its own homepage. The pitch is no user IDs, not even random ones. You add someone with an invite link or a QR code. Servers are not supposed to see who talks to whom. Anyone can run a server. The project is user-funded.
Reddit likes the architecture and complains about the daily use. Notifications fail for some people even with instant mode on. You open the app every few hours. Groups and stickers lag other apps. If both of you will tap a QR code and check the app, SimpleX fits. If you need a name you can type, it will feel unfinished.
Element and Matrix
Matrix is a protocol. Element is the usual app. Reddit points families and privacy nerds here when they want something closer to Discord than to Signal. You pick a server. Many servers ask for an email. You can host your own. That is power. It is also homework.
Use Element when you already have a Matrix room, or when you want multi-device and do not mind an email. Skip it if you just left a dating app and need a usertag in two minutes.
Threema
Threema sells a random ID. Official and Reddit both say you can skip phone and email. You pay once. That is the filter. PCMag and privacy threads treat it as the paid, polished option. If you later attach a number in settings, you undid the point.
Threema still looks like a chat app. The home screen tells on you the same way Session does.
Apps that still need a number
PCMag’s 2026 list still starts with Signal. However, Signal now offers an optional, paid numberless registration method through Signal Login on Android beta. WhatsApp still requires a phone number for registration. The honest WhatsApp walkthrough is WhatsApp without a phone number. Telegram’s regular signup is a number. Telegram’s own December 2022 blog added no-SIM signup through Fragment’s +888 collectible numbers. That is a paid blockchain number, not “no number.” We unpack that on telegram no phone number.
Diode’s ranking blog makes the identity case well. In countries where SIM registration requires government-issued identification, a phone number can be linked to a person’s identity. If someone gets the phone, they get the graph. We agree on the problem. Diode is one product blog in this SERP. It is not the only fix.
If you already like the private-messenger essay, keep private messaging app for the “why the number is the leak” argument. This page is the list.
When DailyNewsTalk is the better fit
Use Session or SimpleX when both of you want a nerd messenger and you do not care what the icon looks like. Use DailyNewsTalk when you also need the chat off the home screen, off the lock screen, and out of the camera roll.
You pick a usertag. That string is the name and the secret. There is no “email me a reset code.” Alerts look like news. Calls stay out of Recents. Either of you can clear the thread on both phones. A couple plan lets one person pay so the other store history stays clean.
Disclosure: we are associated with DailyNewsTalk. It is one option, based on how we test it. If that is what you want, download DailyNewsTalk.
After a dating match, you may also want the hide-profile side. See grindr incognito if the grid is the leak. For the full hide-chat cluster, start with secret messaging apps.
Questions people ask
What is the best messaging app without a phone number?
There is no one winner. Session and SimpleX skip the number and encrypt by default. Element needs a server and often an email. DailyNewsTalk skips the number and hides the chat behind a news app. Pick the leak you actually have.
Is there a free messaging app without a phone number?
Session, SimpleX, and DailyNewsTalk all start free. Threema is paid. “Free texting app” results are usually second-number SMS, which is a different product.
Can I use WhatsApp or Signal without a phone number?
WhatsApp still requires a phone number to register. Signal offers an optional, paid numberless registration method through Signal Login on Android beta. Standard Signal registration still requires a phone number. See WhatsApp without a phone number if that is the search you actually typed. We are not writing a burner-SMS walkthrough.
Is Telegram a no-number app?
No. The default account is a phone number. The official workaround is a Fragment collectible number you buy with TON. You still have a number. It is just not a SIM in your tray.
Will the other person see my number?
On WhatsApp, new contacts may not see your phone number if you have enabled a username. However, people who already have your number may still know it. On Session, SimpleX, Threema, and DailyNewsTalk they get an ID or a usertag. On Telegram they see what your privacy settings allow, and people who already saved the number may still match it.
What this page cannot promise
No-number signup hides the SIM. It does not hide an app icon unless the app is built for that. Screenshot blocks fail if someone uses another camera. A usertag you reuse on every site is still a name. Do not use these apps to contact strangers who did not ask to be contacted.
