They open the chat. A green dot sits by your name. If you need to know how to hide last seen on Instagram, you want that “Active now” line gone. You are not trying to hide the whole app.
Instagram’s own help calls this Activity Status, not last seen. People you follow, and people you message, can see when you were last active. Turn it off and you also lose theirs. The Hindu’s how-to and the ranking Reddit thread both land on that both-sides catch.
If the real job is a chat that never shows “active,” DailyNewsTalk is built for that. It looks like a news app until you long-press and enter a PIN. You find each other with a usertag. There is no last-seen row on a news alert. Download DailyNewsTalk.
This page is for your own account. It does not teach you to watch someone else’s last active time.
Activity Status, Hide DMs, and a News-Look Chat
| Tool | What it does | What it still shows |
|---|---|---|
| Activity Status off | Hides your Active now and last-active time. | You also cannot see theirs. The camera icon stays. |
| Restrict or Chat Lock | Moves one thread out of the main inbox. | They can still see you were active if the switch is on. |
| Hide a Story | Stops one person seeing Stories and Live. | Your last active in their DM can still show. |
| DailyNewsTalk | A full chat behind a news feed. No last-seen row. | A news app on the home screen. |
When DailyNewsTalk is the better fit
Stay in Instagram when you only needed the green dot off, and you can live without seeing theirs. Move the chat out when “Active now” is the fear, and a camera icon is already on the home screen.
DailyNewsTalk looks like a news reader. You long-press, type a PIN, and the chat opens. Alerts look like news. Mute tells the other person you muted. Either of you can clear the thread on both phones. You do not hand over a number.
Disclosure: we are associated with DailyNewsTalk. It is one option, based on how we test it. All chats are end‑to‑end encrypted. Your usertag and PIN are stored locally — we do not have access to your conversations. If that is what you want, download DailyNewsTalk.
For the full hide-chat cluster, start with secret messaging apps.

How to Turn Off Last Seen on Instagram
Official help is short. Open Instagram. Go to your profile. Tap the menu. Open Settings and activity. Under How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies. Tap Show Activity Status. Turn the switch off.
Older write-ups said Privacy, then Activity Status. The Hindu’s 2024 steps already use Messages and story replies. If your app still shows the old Privacy row, the switch is the same job. Update Instagram if you cannot find it.
When the switch is on, a green dot or a timestamp can sit next to your photo in messaging. That is the last seen people mean. Turning it off is how you hide it.
The Both-Sides Catch
Instagram is blunt. If you hide your Activity Status, you will not see when other accounts are active. You also will not see recently active in the same chat. The ranking Reddit thread is mostly people hunting a one-way hide. That switch does not exist.
You cannot hide last seen from one person and keep it for everyone else. Restrict can move a chat. It does not give you a private last-seen list. If they already know your username, they can still send a message and wait.
Last Seen vs Hide Instagram Messages
Closing last seen does not hide the thread. The name stays in the inbox. A new line can still sit on the lock screen. For that job, use how to hide a message on Instagram.
Hiding a Story is also a different tap. See how to hide a story from someone on Instagram if the leak is the ring, not the green dot.
A screenshot of a Story is a third question. That sits on does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story.
What People on Reddit Say
The thread that ranks is “How do I turn off my activity status now.” People cannot find the old Privacy path after an app change. The answers point at Messages and story replies. The follow-up is always the same. They did not want to lose everyone else’s last active time.
You will also see “how do I see when they were last active after they hid it.” Official help says you cannot. This page will not pretend there is a hidden viewer tool.
Questions People Ask
How do I turn off last active on Instagram?
Open Settings and activity. Tap Messages and story replies, then Show Activity Status, then turn it off. That hides Active now and the last-active time. You also stop seeing other people’s status. There is no one-person switch.
Can I hide online status on Instagram from one person?
No. Activity Status is all or nothing. Restrict can move their chat out of the main inbox. It does not give you a private last-seen list. If you need one person off the Story ring, that is hide story, not last seen.
If I hide last seen, can I still see theirs?
No. Official help says you lose their active and recently active status too. That is the trade for closing last seen. Reddit threads that ask for a one-way hide do not have an official answer, because Instagram does not offer one.
Does closing last seen hide my DMs?
No. The thread stays in the inbox after you hide last seen. Lock-screen previews can still show a name. Use restrict or Chat Lock for the list. Use notification settings for the lock screen. Last seen only hides the green dot.
Will they know I turned Activity Status off?
Instagram does not send a “they hid last seen” ping. They may notice that they never see you as Active now. They may also notice that you never see them as active. The menu itself does not message them when you flip the switch.
What This Page Cannot Promise
Activity Status hides a timestamp. It does not hide Instagram, a DM list, or a person who already has your username. Menus move after updates. No camera-app inbox makes a shared home screen safe by itself.
